Any thoughts on running a 31 tooth pinion on an 80 odd spur for vacant lot style bashing? I've been running a 15 turn venom fireball (way advanced) with the stock spur and a 19 tooth pinion and seem to be around 20-25 mph. Looking for more like 30. Not too worried about the cheapy motor, but gets hot in current setup when run hard after 10-12 mins. Using a XL5 ESC if that matters...How long before I fry something?

well if your motor is already hot with 20-25 mph and you put more top end gearing in it, there will be more of a stress load on the motor taking off which will make it hotter. kinda new to electrics but thats a general rule of thumb i beleive.

Thing is it doesn't get hot except towards the end of the pack, and that's running hard on grass with hard pack mixed in. We'll see what happens...Going to be more for parking lot bashing anyways...

that why you running hot, in grass you have alot of drag, and it just works harder therefore gets hot, but if u go higher gearing in the grass it will get hot say around the half pack instead of near the end of the pack.....all things to loook into to

That is something I've wondered about...Why the XL5 is good down to 15 turn for a 540 can but 12 turn for a 550. It's not advanced past the marks on the can so I figure it maybe picked up a turn. It's never gotten hot enough to cause any concern, like I said that setup will be more for on road. If anyone can shed light on how the different can size affects the motor turn limit on the ESC that would be greatly appreciated.

the 550 can has a "torque band" around it, and helps keep teh magnetic field limited.... its not too good an idea to advance a 15 turn on that esc more than about 5-6 degrees.lol

Cool....thanks for the input. Think maybe I'll start off with the 15 set back to stock and try a 26 tooth first and go from there. I haven't had any problems running it almost all the way advanced. Only problems I had with this esc was trying to get it to work with my airtronics RX/TX. Apparently this is not an uncommon problem. As a result I'm running a no-name rx/tx from my wind hobbies ferret LOL. I gave up on that. Just FYI with the XL% and the 15T and a 19 (?) tooth pinion it tops out about 27mph with a six cell. I'm always looking for more....Anyone want to donate a seven cell hump pack?LOL

Any opinions on how this battery would run in a car? Sounds pretty beastly. http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXMDK1&P=ML
